7 Wines to Get You Through the Blizzard

We asked a wine expert to share her top picks for enduring a snowstorm.

When the weather outside is frightful, what will you be sipping?

Heather Johnston is a wine connoisseur and owner of Good Wine in Brooklyn. Here's her list to help guide you down the wine aisle:

1. Syrah - Also known as Shiraz, this wine offers flavors of blackberry and spice with a dry, smooth finish. Ideal for a dark and stormy night.

2. Barbera - Typically from the Piedmont region of Italy, wines from this grape are soft and medium-bodied with jammy fruit. Works well with pizza and TV.

3. Zinfandel - Zinfandel is spicy with bright jammy fruit. It's a full-body wine that comes on strong. A must with chili con carne.

4. Gruner Veltliner - One of Austria’s best known wines, this crisp white brings a signature hint of white pepper and good minerality. Great for watching snow fall.

5. Tawny Port - A touch sweet but with balancing acidity, nutty aromas and a light lingering finish, Port is a natural match for dark chocolate and cold nights.

6. Sake - Ginjo (or Premium) sake offers crisp, clean flavors of apple and pear with a round mouthfeel and medium body. Delightful served warm.

7. Prosecco - Fruit-forward, fresh and fun, Prosecco, perhaps with a splash of orange juice, makes a lovely addition to a hearty breakfast.

As a bonus, here are a few tips from other wine lovers (who also happen to work at WNYC):

Box wine for when you're unapologetic about day-drinking during a storm. Bonus fact: 1 box = 4 bottles. —Delaney Simmons, social media director

Syrah. It's gotta a little peppery finish you can imagine is a source of heat. —Brian Whitton, digital developer

Box wine for making sangria with pals who crash together post park sledding and snowball fighting! —Lauren Morris, social and data

I was in London visiting friends for Christmas and they served this really sweet but lovely Stone’s Ginger wine with the appetizer, or right before. It was served over ice with a fresh cut of ginger. Somehow it seemed like the perfect thing to sip when you’re sitting around indoors with a group of people. It’s very sweet but the ice and a slice of real ginger cuts it down a notch. —Beth Fertig, WNYC News

Talisker 18-year-old. A special type of wine from Scotland made from malted barley, which takes care of the chill a hell of a lot better than that grape-based junk. —John Schaefer, Soundcheck

Vino verde is cheap, so you can stock up. And you can stick the bottles in the snow because it’s better chilled. —Sean Beattie, benefits coordinator

Lambrusco!!!! It is very gently sparkling. Great with everything from hot dogs to greek salad and perfect for a weenie roast in the fireplace! —Amy Pearl, multimedia producer

Cote du Rhone to make you feel romantic in the coziness of your couch and Netflix binge. —Alexandra Pinel, special events
