New York, NY —
New Yorkers raising grandchildren find it hard to get help from city agencies. So says a new report from the New York City Kincare Task Force. Co-chair Deborah Langosch says older caretakers often need housing and financial help, but don't find much support.
LANGOSCH: Many of our grandparents felt that when they asked for services, the workers would be very critical and judgemental and not helpful and supportive and it left them feeling degraded.
REPORTER: The city's Department for the Aging says grandparents are often unaware of the resources available to help them raise children.
Spokeswoman Leslie Warren says they may get a larger stipend by becoming "kincare foster parents" than if they have legal custody of their grandchildren.
And she says the Department for the Aging has "grandparent sensitivity training" for other city agencies that are not mandated to help grandparents who are raising children.
