Mayor Meets Council Opposition On School Control

City lawmakers don't agree that the mayor should keep his control of city schools -- just because test scores got a bump this year. During a council hearing yesterday, schools Chancellor Joel Klein credited the mayor's reforms with driving up those scores. Still, Councilman Charles Barron was skeptical.

BARRON: Something is fundamental wrong, and we can't let them sugarcoat it, with a bunch of statistics on how the test scores are going up.

Barron says it's parents who need more power in the schools, not the mayor.

The Bloomberg Administration is lobbying Albany to renew the law that gave the mayor control over city schools. It expires at the end of the month.
