New York, NY —
A Brooklyn mother accused of killing her 11-year-old daughter was arraigned inside a Brooklyn court room yesterday. Florencia Vasquez is facing second degree murder, manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide charges. WNYC's Cindy Rodriguez has more.
REPORTER: Prosecutors say the mother had been beating her daughter, Alejandra Vasquez for over a month. According to Vasquez's attorney, Anthony Baratta, the 11-year-old arrived in New York from Mexico on September 15th. He disputed the police's account of what happened and said the child died after falling in the bathtub while putting up a shower rod. According to the Medical Examiner, blunt force trauma to the head, torso and extremities caused the girl's death.
The Administration for Children's Services had previously placed an older sibling in foster care and, according to the Mayor, the agency was unaware of Alejandra. When a child is removed from a home, it's typical for the family to receive home visits at least once a month. ACS would not comment on the case. For WNYC, I'm Cindy Rodriguez.
