New York, NY —
The Department of Buildings says it ordered a crane be removed from a lower Manhattan job site after inspections showed it was structurally unsafe. The faulty equipment was a Kodiak crane - the same type that collapsed in May killing two workers. DOB commissioner Robert LiMandri said inspectors reviewed all Kodiak cranes and their maintenance histories after the accident.
LIMANDRI: Because what we wanted to make sure was that they would be safe. And when we did that we found issues with that - structural issues - and we took it down.
REPORTER: LiMandri disclosed the removal of the crane during a City Council hearing on legislation to improve construction safety.
Meanwhile, attorneys for the families of the workers who died during the May crane collapse asked a judge to give them more access to the crane's maintenance records.
