New York, NY —
A group of residents in the South Bronx, fed up with the stench from two nearby sewage facilities, have sued to force the city and a private fertilizer company to take away the smell which neighbors describe as smelling like horse manure, rotten eggs or rotting meat.
REPORTER: Tanya Fields is one of the plaintiffs in the lawsuit.
FIELDS: I live about three miles from here. I can smell the smell. I mean loud and clear. I work in the neighborhood when I cross Bruckner Boulevard to go to work I smell the smell. The smell permeates the neighborhood. It's become a resident of this neighborhood just like me or anybody else who lives here.
REPORTER: The lawsuit targets the city, and the New York Organic Fertilizer Company, which turns sewage sludge into fertilizer pellets. The city's Department of Environmental Protection says it has been working with the community to address their complaints.
A call to New York Organic's parent company, Synagro Technologies, has not been returned.
