Report: Women Worse Off than in '89

A report on the economic status of women in New York State shows earnings are stagnant and poverty is up slightly. WNYC's Cindy Rodriguez reports:

The report based on census data from 2005 found that the median salary for women is just above $33,000 a year. When adjusted for inflation, that's $100 less than they were making in 1989.

Poverty rates among women increased from about 13 percent in 1989 to 15 percent in 2005. And about one in four minority women are poor compared to 10 percent of white women.

The situation gets worse as women age. According to the report, by the Institute for Women's Policy Research, less than a third of women 65 and older receive a pension.

There was one bright spot in the data. The number of New York women who own businesses is on the rise. For WNYC, I'm Cindy Rodriguez
