Buildings Chief Vows Greater Accountability

The city's interim head of the Department of Buildings gave the keynote address at a trade show for builders.

Robert LiMandri told the group his agency is cracking down on contractors, architects and engineers who are breaking the rules. He also swore to weed out corruption:

LIMANDRI: Accountability takes all of us, not just my inspectors. I will tell you and let me be clear, that I will not tolerate unethical behavior. Inside my department or those who want to challenge the ethical challenge of my department.

REPORTER: Nine people were arrested recently for bribing inspectors. And two crane inspectors were also arrested for accepting bribes and falsifying documents.

LiMandri also said the city's new building codes that go into affect in two weeks will require sit safety managers at jobs 10 stories or higher. Currently the rule applies to buildings 15 floors or more.
