City: Brooklyn Architect Violated Zoning Rules

A Brooklyn architect often accused of ignoring zoning rules and building too large is in trouble with the city's Department of Buildings — again.

WNYC's Cindy Rodriguez reports.

REPORTER: The agency says that Robert Scarano allegedly made false or misleading statements on permit applications and faces administrative charges. As a result, the DOB says two buildings went up in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, that should not have been allowed. One could not have been legally built as a residential building and the other is 2,000 square feet too big.

Scarano has faced similar charges in the past but it's the first time the DOB has the authority to suspend or revoke his ability to apply for future building permits because of a state law passed last summer.

Scarano has raised the ire of city council members and community boards in Brooklyn who accuse him of flouting zoning rules and safety regulations. A call to Scarano Architects has not yet been returned.
