New York, NY —
Increased training for crane operators, new fines for contractors, and better tracking of violations - those are some of the proposals Mayor Michael Bloomberg and the City Council are pushing to make construction safer in the city. The legislation would also require that contractors register and receive a safety control number from the city before being issued a permit.
BLOOMBERG: This number will enable the department to track the performance record of these contractors, not just on a specific job, but across across all construction sites, and identify patterns of non-compliance and poor safety records.
REPORTER: When asked why the Department of Buildings wasn't already doing this, acting commissioner Robert LiMandri said his agency is a work in progress.
City Council Speaker Christine Quinn couldn't say when all the proposals would pass, but she said it would happen as soon as possible.
