A new survey of city welfare offices shows nearly 75 percent are not providing proper translation services for those who don't speak English. WNYC's Cindy Rodriguez reports.
REPORTER: According to advocates a local law requires the city to translate applications into 6 different languages and have translators available either by phone or in person. The survey shows 51 offices out of 69 are not complying with rules.
Wan Sing Eng, speaks Cantonese and through a translator says she often has trouble communicating with caseworkers about her medicaid case.
ENG: By the time it is our turn they will tell us there is no translator you have to come back next day go home.
REPORTER: A spokeswoman for the city's Human Resources Administration declined to comment on the findings saying the report was too broad and didn't contain enough information about specific welfare offices. for wnyc, I'm Cindy Rodriguez
