City Cracks Down on Delinquent Water Bill Payers

New York City's paying water customers will not see an 18-percent increase in their bills next year. But those who haven't been paying should beware.

REPORTER: Mayor Bloomberg and Council Speaker Christine Quinn announced an agreement yesterday to allow the Department of Environmental Protection, which runs the city’s water system, to put liens on properties that are delinquent in payments.

Quinn Joined the mayor on his weekly WABC radio show with Jon Gambling, to urge people to settle any overdue water bills.

QUINN: The rate will be frozen, but we'll be aggressive... I wanna be clear with people who are listening, if you haven't paid your water bill, you should pay soon 'cause we're gonna come and we're gonna get it.

REPORTER: Bloomberg said single-family homes, where the owner most likely lives stand to have their services turned off. While multi-family homes, which often have renters, will be subject to lien sales.
