New York, NY —
A building association that represents hundreds of large construction companies says it will begin meeting with the Fire Department once a month to discuss fire safety concerns. In addition, FDNY Chief Sal Cassano, says before a building is constructed or demolished, construction companies will submit fire safety plans to the department.
CASSANO: We'll meet with all the site safety managers and all the tradesmen to explain to them what the department needs to make this a safer operation. so that we'll have any problems worked out before the operation. We think it will be a safer way to do it. We certainly know it will be a better way to do it.
REPORTER: Ever since two firefighters died while attempting to put out a blaze at 130 Liberty Street, the city has been working to improve job site safety. Cassano says the new initiative will help improve accountability at construction sites.
