New York, NY —
More than two years after the city re-zoned the neighborhoods of Greenpoint and Williamsburg, it's making good on a promise to try to protect tenants at risk of being displaced. WNYC's Cindy Rodriguez reports.
REPORTER: In a few weeks, the city will award a 2-year, $2 million contract to organizations expected to help tenants keep their apartments in these neighborhoods that are seeing massive development. The groups will be charged with identifying how many residents are being harassed by landlords.
REPORTER: Jack Bikowski, from North Brooklyn Development Corporation, counsels people with housing troubles. He says many Polish tenants have already been forced out to areas such as Ridgewood and Glendale in Queens which are less accessible.
BIKOWSKI: There's much better transportation from Greenpoint/Williamsburg area then Glendale and Ridgewood.
REPORTER: Bikowski's organization is competing for the contract and says the money will allow for more counselors and more attorneys. For WNYC, I'm Cindy Rodriguez.
