Environmental Clean Up Continues in Area of Steam Explosion

The environmental clean up of two midtown office buildings is still underway near Grand Central Station. 370 Lexington Avenue, the building closest to the steam pipe explosion earlier this month, is expected to be closed for another two to three weeks. Henry Weingarten runs a financial consulting firm in the building.

WEINGARTEN: People have concerns. This was a contaminated building. The elevators were contaminated. The hallways were contaminated. Our side of the building, which was the back, was not contaminated but who knows.

REPORTER: The building has hired two environmental companies to perform around the clock clean-up operations. The steel steam pipe that exploded was wrapped in asbestos, a known carcinogen.

REPORTER: The city's Department of Environmental Protection says none of the air or ground samples taken near the site test positive for asbestos. But samples of debris did exhibit traces of it.
