New York, NY —
The city is selling coins collected from parking meters. This year about 500 pounds of foreign coins faked their way into the machines.
REPORTER: The city's deputy chief of meter collections says pretty much every denomination from every continent is represented but the most common coins are Greek drachmas.
REPORTER: The Department of Transportation has collected bids for the foreign coins and plans to announce the best offer today.
REPORTER: In previous years, selling the coins has netted the department between $2 and $4 a pound.
Last year's highest bidder for the coins was 60-year old Jim Corliss of Massachusetts. The longtime collector says every once in a while he finds something of value. Once he came across an 1835 British shilling worth $5.
