New Jersey —
New Jersey's State Environmental Commissioner Lisa Jackson has issued draft recommendations for a new black bear management policy.
REPORTER: She's emphasizing non-lethal measures to control the state's growing bear population. But her recommendations are not supported by the state Fish and Game Council, which is supposed to work with the commissioner in setting wildlife management policy.
REPORTER: The council favors hunting as a way to reduce the bear population, which is now estimated at 3,000 statewide. The state is under court order to have a new bear management policy in place by August 10th and Jackson said she issued the draft policy to meet that deadline.
REPORTER: A public hearing on the matter is scheduled for August 8th.
