New York, NY —
A group representing more than 8,000 taxi drivers has threatened to strike if the city moves forward with the installation of GPS systems in cabs.
REPORTER: The Taxi Workers Alliance has opposed the plan since its inception. Now, it says it will strike by September if the proposal doesn't change.
REPORTER: GPS systems, credit card machines and TV monitors are supposed to be phased into taxis by the end of the year. Director of the Taxi Workers Alliance, Bhairavi Desai, says the technology is an insult to their dignity.
DESAI: Drivers have no basic labor rights, but we value our independence on the job. And for the TLC to say to taxi drivers that the priority is this nonsense technology, rather than health care - it's a slap in the face.
REPORTER: Taxi and Limousine Commission head Matthew Daus says the systems were designed with the help of passenger and driver input. The GPS technology was also promised 3 years ago, when a 26% fare increase was accepted.
