Businesses Struggle to Re-Open Doors in Steam Blast Zone

While some businesses in the area around last week's steam pipe explosion have reopened their doors still others remain closed. They're dealing with broken windows, water damage, and lost foot traffic.

REPORTER: The 56-story Chanin Building was closed off to tenants yesterday and will be closed for a couple more days, at least. On the ground floor is a "Pret a Manger." Company President Gerard Loughran says the salad and sandwich shop just opened in February.

LOUGHRAN: We have 20 staff on our payroll that we're covering the cost of that right now. We're losing about $10,000 a day because we're not open. And then of course there's going to be the cost of refitting the site, which I don't know could run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars but hopefully it won't.

REPORTER: The city is offering zero-interest loans of up to $10,000 to help some businesses manage the costs.
