Police Recruits Attend Special Training

The police department's newest recruits are learning about some of the NYPD's lowest moments. The hope is that history won't repeat itself. A four day multicultural immersion course includes case studies of Amadou Diallo's death and the torture of Abner Louima.

REPORTER: Yesterday at the Apollo Theater, 1,100 recruits listened to a panel of black and Latino leaders discuss what's wrong with the NYPD and how community relations can be improved. Reverend Calvin Butts said he appreciates what the police do.

BUTTS: But, we also know that there are too many officers who disrespect many of the communities here in New York City. The training we believe in terms of erasing xenophobia needs to be more intense.

REPORTER: The recruits graduate from the police academy next week. Then, they'll take another six months of community-related training on the job.
