New York, NY —
New York City police officers involved in shootings may soon face mandatory sobriety tests. Under new policies set take effect in September, the NYPD would administer Breathalyzer tests on any on or off duty officer who kills or wounds someone.
REPORTER: The NYPD would use the test results to determine if alcohol was a factor in a shooting and if the shooter should be disciplined.
REPORTER: The new policy was prompted by last year's killing of Sean Bell, who was unarmed when he was shot by police. Police Commissioner Ray Kelly says the tests are 1 of 19 recommendations made by a panel he assigned to study the NYPD's undercover operations.
REPORTER: Kelly says he's sending the recommendations to senior commanders for feedback and that he hopes to have the changes in place soon after he hears back from them.
