Long Island to Receive One of Nation's Largest National Guard and Reserve Unit Facilities

REPORTER: Long Island will get one of the largest National Guard and Reserve Unit facilities in the US. Democratic Congressman Steve Israel says after the communication breakdown following Hurricane Katrina, he wanted federal disaster responders to work together under one roof.

ISRAEL: In this case, you're going to have the New York National Guard, the US Military reserve, US Naval Reserve and the US Army reserve in this one central location with personnel and the equipment on hand for deployment against a category three hurricane or an act of terror.

REPORTER: The Armed Forces Reserve Center will be located in Farmingdale. It's slated to open in 2010 and will accommodate more than 1,200 military personnel.
