Giuliani Meets With Conservative Base

Presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani continues his efforts to woo the conservative base of the Republican party. The former mayor is scheduled to speak at the Washington-based Heritage Foundation tonight. WNYC's Elaine Rivera reports.

REORTER: Previous guests have included Vice President Dick Cheney and former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher. It is one of several campaign stops that have been scheduled before conservative groups. But observers say that as Giuliani tries to win over more conservative voters, he is putting himself in an awkward box. Political consultant Norman Adler says Giuliani tried to have it both ways when questioned during last week's debate about the abortion issue.

ADLER: Giuliani looked and sounded very uncomfortable in the debate and the reason was simple he was trying to appeal to conservatives for whom abortion is a critical issue while not alienating middle-of-the-road Republicans.

REPOTER: Giuliani said while he remained pro-choice, he would be okay if Roe vs. Wade were repealed. For WNYC, I'm Elaine Rivera.
