New York, NY —
The latest polls are good news for former Mayor Rudy Giuliani. He'll continue his exploratory campaign for the presidency next week in New York. If it's anything like the past week, the roller coaster ride will go on. WNYC's Elaine Rivera reports.
REPORTER: In just one week Giuliani has appeared on the cover of Newsweek and addressed the estrangement from his son Andrew who publicly said he would not campaign for his father. He also sold the financial arm of his lucrative consulting business. And the latest Quinnipiac poll shows Giuliani ahead by double digits in 3 states against his key Republican primary rival, John McCain.
Some critics say that Giuliani's personal foibles, including the rift with his son, will hurt him with the far right. But Republican political consultant Joe Mecurio says Giuliani is drawing support from other conservatives despite his tumultuous personal history.
MECURIO: He's the person nationally who can slay the dragon to these conservatives and they're willing to give him a pass on lots and lots of things.
