Brooklyn, NY —
Ice skaters in Brooklyn will be losing Wollman Rink, in Prospect Park, but are getting two new rinks in return and a year-round recreation building. The city and parks officials say they'll be landscaping over the old rink, as per the original park design.
REPORTER: One person who was at the announcement was 91-year-old Margie Parker. She performed at the 1936 Winter Olympics, before ice dancing was a medal sport.
PARKER: That year, 1936, the first time they made it a national dance, and so Joe Savitch and I won it.
PARKER: So I see the kids now, dancing, and say, Oh, I started that.
REPORTER: The two new rinks will be built on existing parking lots. The 39 million dollar project is being paid for by public and private funds.
