New York, NY —
REPORTER: Parent advocates and elected officials have called on the Bloomberg administration to pause before re-organizing the school system this fall. The city comptroller and Manhattan Borough president support mayoral control of the city's schools, but say Bloomberg and Schools Chancellor Joel Klein moved too quickly. Pat Boon of the Coalition for Educational Justice says parents don't feel included in decisions, like the recent bus route changes.
BOON: Chancellor Klein feels that he and his consultants can make these decisions that affect our children's lives and dictate them to the public.
REPORTER: A spokesman for Klein says school officials have already met with some of the concerned groups and they're also hosting community meetings to discuss its plans. This fall, the city's education department plans to eliminate the 10 administrative regions, give principals more autonomy and rate schools based on test results.
