Sanitation Department Gets to Work After Snow Hits

REPORTER: The day after the winter storm, dozens of schools are opening late this morning - and some are closed. The main roads are plowed, sanded and salted. But some secondary roads are still covered with ice and snow, and don't have all lanes cleared. City Sanitation Commissioner John Doherty says alternate side of the street parking will NOT be suspended today.

DOHERTY: People pull their vehicles out, if you don't clear it away, they won't be able to get it back in properly. And then they start stickin' out into the roadways. So it leads to other problems that people don't recognize - you know, the first thought "Oh, I gotta move my car. Where am I going to put it?" Well you know, it's one of those things - that's life in New York and it's tough but that's the way we keep our streets clean around here.

REPORTER: And it won't break the freezing mark today. The weather forecast is just calling for a high of 26 degrees. The National Weather Service says Central Park recorded 2 inches of snow, JFK Airport got a little more than an inch, and LaGuardia got just over 2 inches. Yesterday's storm gave ski areas anywhere from a foot to 3 feet of snow, good news for anyone skiing over the Presidents' Day weekend.
