Shooting Victim Released from Hospital

Joseph Guzman, one of the two men who survived the police shooting that left Sean Bell dead, was released from the hospital yesterday. He spoke in Harlem, alongside Reverend Al Sharpton. WNYC's Arun Venugopal was there.

REPORTER: Joseph Guzman sat in a wheelchair, wearing a blue sweatshirt with Sean Bell's name emblazoned in sequins across the front. He still has 6 bullets in his body, and said the nerve damage in his right foot prevents him from walking yet. Guzman does not think race played a role in the shooting. But he said the police failed to identify themselves before opening fire, leaving Guzman and the others under the impression they were being robbed. When the shooting stopped Guzman lay on top of Sean Bell, in the car.

GUZMAN: I told S I love you - we called him S, I called him - I told him S I love you. He said “I love you too.” But he stopped moving. Stopped talking. I called him. I said “S, S.” Not responding. Stopped moving, stopped talking. That's how I knew he was shot real bad.

REPORTER: Guzman also said there was no 4th man the night of the shooting, and no gun. For WNYC, I'm Arun Venugopal.
