Gov. Spitzer Takes Oath of Office

Democrat Eliot Spitzer was sworn in as New York's 54th governor at midnight during a private ceremony at the governor's mansion. His wife, Silda, and 3 daughters were part of the crowd that responded with a resounding cheer after Spitzer took his oath of office.

SPITZER: Happy New Year. As I was just informed, Day One has begun.

REPORTER: Spitzer vowed to "replace delay and diversion with energy and purpose." The ceremony took place in front of the executive mansion's fireplace, where photos of former Governor George Pataki and his family have been replaced with Spitzer family photos.

Federal Judge Robert Sweet issued the oath of office. Among the approximately 100 guests were former Governor Hugh Carey, Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver and Herman "Denny" Farrell Junior, the former chair of the state Democratic Party. Spitzer's parents, Bernard and Anne, were also present.
