Bloomberg Stands by Commissioner Kelly

Two days after the shooting death of Sean Bell, Mayor Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Ray Kelly met with leaders of the black community, with promises of conducting a fair and thorough investigation. WNYC's Arun Venugopal was at City Hall.

REPORTER: The mayor seemed visibly affected, not just by the gravity of Bell's death but by the awareness that his handling of the matter is being very closely watched. He said he is standing by Commissioner Kelly, and doesn't think the shootings were racially motivated, but does think they involved excessive force.

Commissioner Kelly said the 2 undercover officers at the scene had been drinking, but that they were declared fit for duty. However, according to Councilman James Sanders, there continue to be doubts about their sobriety.

SANDERS: It turned out that it was a commanding officer taking a look at the men, and coming to the conclusion of, You look okay, You look okay. So it's not a question of sobriety test, which is a breath analyser or blood.

REPORTER: The police are still not sure why Sean Bell and his 2 friends were suspected of carrying a gun, but are hoping to find a mysterious 4th man, who may have fled the scene that night. For WNYC, I'm Arun Venugopal.
