Thousands Remain Without Power in Queens

Con Ed says about 18-hundred customers in northwestern Queens remain without power today. For many businesses, this means thousands of dollars in losses. WNYC's Cindy Rodriguez visited one commercial district in Woodside, Queens.

REPORTER: Underneath the 7 train on Roosevelt Avenue many businesses are closed and those that aren't are waiting for their power to be restored. A few lamps are working At Donovan's Irish Pub. But Manager Bob Casello says the refrigeration and exhaust system are knocked out and no food has been served since Tuesday.

COSELLO: We gotta go out and buy tons of ice to ice down the beer... it's been terrible.

REPORTER: Across the street piles of fresh fish sit on top of freezers that are no longer working. If they are not bought soon they will have to be thrown out. Jenny Chen, the owner of a Nu Long Chen groceries says more than a thousand dollars worth has already been destroyed.

CHEN: without ice they are getting bad so we have to throw them away

REPORTER: Some businesses have been using generators to stay open. Down the street Jose Luis Gonzalez has just gassed his up. The owner of Mexicano Grocery says it's still not enough to keep everything refrigerated. He lists what's already been lost:

GONZALEZ: Milk, meats, cheese, we have all the cold cuts we have to throw away to the garbage and we have no good service for the customers... they are looking for cold waters, sodas, beers.

REPORTER: Business owners aren't sure how much longer they can stay open and they're growing impatient with the situation. Con Ed cannot confirm when the problem will be fixed.
