City Suggests Commuter Car Pools

City and county officials have offered back-up plans in the event of a transit strike. WNYC's Arun Venugopal has more.

Besides encouraging commuters to find friends in Manhattan they can stay with, city officials are suggesting commuters car pool or work from home. Police will enforce a four-passenger rule for any car entering Manhattan below 96th street starting Friday morning.

The city and suburbs are setting up plenty of carpooling sites, and will allow taxis to pick up multiple fares. The MTA is advising those who use Metro North or the Long Island Rail Road to stay home, but plans to have commuter service in most areas while also operating shuttles along certain routes.

Ferry service will also be expanded and PATH trains will run from the World Trade Center to 33rd street in midtown.
