New York, NY —
Hundreds of NYU students and faculty demonstrated yesterday to voice support for striking graduate assistants. WNYC's Arun Venugopal has more.
The high point of the protest came when the protesters thronged the lobby of Bobst Library, filling it with the sound of their chants. However, as the semester winds down and finals approach it seems as if the momentum is on the university's side.
More instructors are holding classes on campus and there's a rising sense of frustration on the part of many undergraduates, who simply want to attend class and get their grades. This Monday could be a turning point.
The university says if the striking graduate students don't return to work by then they'll face the prospect of losing their teaching assignments and stipends. But the graduate assistants say they won't return until the university once again recognizes their union.
