Gas Prices Highest on Record

The average price for a gallon of gas in the city is near three dollars—that's the highest price on record.

O'LEARY: Gas prices ares still rising, but adjusted for inflation, they're still short of the level reached in 1981. A spokesman for the automobile club of New York says he's heard of regional prices as high as 3.49 a gallon. Robert Sinclair adds that smaller, independent gas stations are likely to be hardest hit by the damage to refineries in the gulf.

SINCLAIR: There might be some supply problems in the near future with them having to cut back on the hours of operation, or perhaps closing completely at least temporarily.

O'LEARY: The city's department of consumer affairs is also keeping a close eye on gas prices. They've stepped up inspections of the twelve hundrend stations in the city to make sure pumps are measuring accurately and gas is not watered down. For WNYC, I'm Lizzie O'Leary.
