City's Worst Landlords

Outside a dilapidated building in the Inwood section of Manhattan, tenants and housing groups called on the city to crack down on slumlords. WNYC's Cindy Rodriguez has more on a list those groups assembled of the city's worst landlords.

REPORTER: Tenants complained about moldy bathrooms, falling ceilings and unstable stairwells. The group Housing Here and Now released a list of what they say are the city's worst landlords. Siomara Mejias's landlord is on the list. She says she pays $775 a month for a two bedroom apartment on Valentine Avenue in the Bronx. She worries the apartment is unhealthy for her 3 small children:

MEJIAS: We have peeling paint. We have infestation of roaches. We have rats. We have broken tiles throughout the apartment that are uplifting

REPORTER: The owner of the building was not available for comment. The city says its working with advocates and city councilmembers to identify dilapidated properties. And will make its own repairs when a landlord fails to do so.
