Navy Property on Vieques Now Nature Preserve

More than 14,000 acres of land on the island of Vieques, once controlled by the US navy, are now officially open as a nature preserve. For many the Navy's exit marks a victory at the end of decades of struggle. It was a fight that gained political significance far beyond the shores of Puerto Rico, involving numerous New York politicians such as Governor Pataki. Earlier this week, thousands gathered to celebrate and witness the moment they would gain access to the land.
