Condé Nast Publications is closing famed food magazine Gourmet, after 68-years of publication. New York Times food critic Sam Sifton says almost all of New York City's high-end food industry grew up with the magazine. He says it's the sudden loss that's hard to take.

To have a stately old dowager taken away, that's a wake up call. Although I'm not sure what world it wakes us up into.

Condé Nast blames decreasing circulation and advertising revenue for the decision to close the magazine. Sifton says he hopes New York's other publications can fill the void for sophisticated restaurant, food and travel journalism.

Gourmet was not alone. Condé Nast also announced it is closing Modern Bride, Elegant Bride and Cookie, a parenting magazine. Earlier in the year it killed publication of Portfolio, a business magazine, and Domino, a lifestyle title.

The last Gourmet issue is scheduled for November.
