Leaving your car unattended with the keys in the ignition is a risky move. It could attract thieves, and now the possibility of a $250 fine. The City Council increased the fine for the offense from five dollars.
The measure follows a January incident, in which an unattended delivery van in Chinatown was left in reverse and rolled backwards into a group of preschoolers. The accident killed two children. A month later, a drunk driver in Queens stole an idling car and fatally struck two high school students.
The City Council also adopted new advertising rules for businesses trying to sell loan-modification advice to those at risk of foreclosure. The measure requires all print advertisements to disclose the state regulations governing the industry. State law requires the businesses have written contracts with clients and forbids them to accept payment up front before completing services. Print ads that don't disclose the state laws could incur $5,000 fines.
And, the council approved The Museum of Modern Art's proposal for a new 82-story, 1,000 foot mixed-use tower on West 53rd Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues next to the current MoMA. The museum says the tower will provide exhibition space, and include 150 apartments and 100 hotel rooms.
