As this report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture shows, New Jersey ranks near the bottom of states when it comes to the percentage of people eligible for Food Stamps actually enrolled in the program. In fact, the Garden State ranks 42nd among all 50 states and the District of Columbia, with a 59% participation rate as of 2007, the most recent year for which data are available. (New York ranks 37th, with a 61% participation rate. Connecticut ranks 21st, with 69% of those eligible actually enrolled.)
As Bob Hennelly reports, double digit unemployment and thousands of foreclosures are stressing the network of 800 food pantries in New Jersey. Emergency food providers and soup kitchens are reporting a jump in demand of 30 percent or more from last year.
