Advocates Call for Public Hearings Before Approving MTA Leadership Changes

The MTA Chairman is leaving by the end of the month, but it still isn’t clear who will replace him. Now, advocates are calling for a public hearing to discuss the issue.

Currently, the top leader at the MTA is both the board chair and CEO. The governor wants to split those jobs, but that requires state senate approval.

Cuomo had hoped to appoint the current president of subways and buses to head the board, and make the head of construction the new CEO. But now a coalition of 12 groups is calling on lawmakers to hold a public hearing about Cuomo’s plan, before voting.

They say that rushed changes undermine public confidence.

A spokesperson for the senate says a hearing is likely later this month.
