Last week, Governor Andrew Cuomo pardoned five people convicted of crimes. He also commuted the sentences of five long-serving prisoners, making a total of 36 times he has reduced a prisoner's sentence.
That's out of thousands of requests for mercy. Prisoner advocates say the governor largely forfeited a golden opportunity to use his executive power to return the rehabilitated to their families and communities with almost no risk to public safety.
Now they're hoping that Governor Hochul will do better.
