'Generation Occupy,' Get Lit Preview, 'Filipinx' Cookbook, Jack Burton Biopic, 125 Years of NYT Book Review

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the movement known as Occupy Wall Street. Michael Levitin, author of the book Generation Occupy, joins us to talk about how the Occupy movement served as a catalyst for current activism and we’ll take calls from listeners who may have been a part of the group or inspired to become politically active because of it. 

This month we have selected the 1929 novel Passing by Nella Larsen as our Get Lit with All Of It book club selection. Kaitlyn Greenidge, author of the novel Libertie, come on for a discussion of the history of the novel and its broader themes. Greenidge wrote the forward for the Modern Library edition of the novel.

In her debut cookbook, Filipinx: Heritage Recipes from the Diaspora, chef Angela Dimayuga explores the recipes that remind her of home, growing up as one of the more than four million people of Filipino descent in the United States. Dimayuga talks the new cookbook, and showcases her take on the classic Filipino dishes she grew up eating.

Jake Burton Carpenter was the founder of Burton Snowboards and one of the main figures responsible for making snowboarding a popular and celebrated sport. He also battled a rare nerve disorder called Miller Fisher Syndrome, and cancer, which took his life in 2019. A new HBO documentary takes a look at the life of this snowboarding pioneer. Director Ferdinand Villena joins us to discuss his film “Dear Rider: The Jake Burton Story,” which premieres on HBO and HBO Max on November 9 at 9 pm.

Deputy editor of the Book Review Tina Jordan discusses how the section has changed in that period, reminisce about some of the classic books that were panned by the Times, and take calls from listeners about the best book published in the last 125 years.
