Ask Governor Murphy: A Post-Budget Call-In

Governor Murphy Call-In Show

After working with lawmakers right up until the midnight deadline, New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy passed $37.4 billion state budget earlier this month that will raise taxes on the very wealthy and some businesses, while providing increased funding for schools and mass transit.

One thing that wasn't finalized during the budget process: Next steps for legal marijuana. But in the latest installment of Ask Governor Murphy, the governor told host Nancy Solomon that if and when legalization comes, expunging past convictions should be a part of the deal.

"You can't incarcerate somebody who did something on Friday and allow someone to do the same thing on Monday to do it legally," Murphy said. "It doesn't work for me. It doesn't work for many. It frankly doesn't work for most folks who look at this so that's got to be a part of it."
