Now it's time for another of our monthly talks on Bringing Up Baby Dr Liana Baumgartner assistant commissioner in charge of child health services in the New York City Department of Health this is the tendon in programs and Bobby son of Mr Cowen is now just ten months old and now as Mr COWEN I say good morning Dr Baumgartner today you want to concentrate on some of the questions most likely to arise when the baby is ten months old don't you Dr Baumgartner yes I consider several problems that often arise in the last quarter of the first year however I'm afraid some of our listeners might have missed the point that I've tried hard to make that doesn't know exactly alike and that while growth and development is an orderly process normal babies at any for a great you know just as much as their parents you sound as though you've been getting letters saying you said nine month old babies can stand by James can't watch alive. Well exactly you do get letters like that and of course you know what I did say was that a baby can usually sit at nine months and some of them can stand and some of them can even walk with help that isn't at ten months more of them can stand in a few more can walk with help or even take a step or two alone with babies of course walk alone March until about fifteen months as I understand it a healthy infant will do what he is ready to do some things before other babies. Other things more slowly Zachary right Mr Khan I think you're going to be a pretty fine father if you can hold on to that idea and bring up your boy Bobby. Horton thing is not to rush just allow them enough freedom to do the things that their own. Courage their efforts to acquire new skills but don't push them. How about shoes we've had so many questions about Dr Baumgartner. About shoes that under normal conditions there are necessary until a child is walking alone before that you know they really only serve one purpose they keep warm and. Serve exactly the same purpose in their life confining and incidentally they're less expensive they just seem sensible Well how about when the babies. Sometimes are to keep on in that case soft leather shoes so they're pretty useful so long as they're big enough and wide enough when a baby does walk alone on hard surfaces that's the time to get his first real issue any soft goals are probably best at first as they give the chance to normally and issues incidentally need not be spent to be satisfactory I suppose the best problem. It is a good idea to know about it because. Now. For the growing. Importance wearing out. There should be more than just enough. Because when the child was. Down in the shoe and as a child stand there. Half an inch between the tip of the shoe and the child. No not necessarily not at least if the child. The great advantage of course is that they stay on small children better than the long ones do on the other hand low shoes are easier for the mother to slip on and off. If the child is normal. But. Probably a good doctor. And you know examination of the. Part of the check up on his. Family doctor to the child help station if a correct doctor will prescribe. An orthopedic doctor that. The federal government. Curity act together with the state and the city will pay for the hospital care and also for the appliances for any child under twenty one years of age me. If any parent listening has any questions that are all about their so-called aid for handicapped children they can just write to me you know I don't quite remember how we came to discuss all this but I'm awfully glad we did I sometimes think I neglect to publicize all the services that are owns that he Health Department offers and of course our main idea is to serve the public well I've learned a lot about them and. Help well. But back to our topic is there really much difference between a nine and ten month old baby nine for any one child yes they know the differences in in body you accomplishments are a daily occurrence maybe doing a new trick making the news that having a new fear learning to throw away things is the new things many a baby of this age is not. There's always something but it is a little harder to give a general description that will fit a ten month old baby and not a nine Not yet because difference is there is a parent now maybe just growing that. I've noticed that with Bobby but even the new food for a ten month old course they can ban their appetite one of the things we want to do is to be sure that the baby get an ever larger variety of food as they grow older at this stage there are two very important ones which we've discussed. Is the first is often added about a ten month Doctor's a car. A little while longer Why is that. Allergies than any other food that is commonly offered debate for that reason. When one is. Very small amount. No reaction. At ten months it has been given earlier I think we tried at lunch time. That is not oily and probably. Like. There is there really is no good. But then you know. The really important thing about particularly in these early years is to enjoy it isn't it dangerous to leave the baby. We read so much about. For I don't think it's dangerous as a matter of fact we've had some experiments to prove remember that a baby is after. So long and important. One offers him a lot of time. Well. I know you have and I'm so glad you are you know one of the most common problems that parents. Getting to be around a year of age. You remember how much. Well. Right. Well if. You are what do you think the moral of. Growing rapidly. And. Building the body. In a rapidly growing area more. The slow down of this around the year of. A natural decrease in the appetite and the baby is wise enough. I suppose that's where parents get into trouble they don't know that the baby needs a worry and try to force a back to me and how and right we often call babies to become the problems whatever you want to call them well I'm glad to know that. Almost a year old yes and do remember the babies are all of you remember this already but remember the babies have their own ideas of what and how much they like just as they do about what they want to play with where they want to go and make a big fuss and they clamored to assert themselves if they don't get what they want to do babies. Temper Tantrum. Temper and really now I think there isn't any one of the. Must be very annoying to a baby when they cannot reach something that when something very nice is suddenly taken away from way from human or no reason at all so naturally. Being taken out of these funny having fun flushing or being driven away from a new toy with possibility. May get him into a real temper. Or even join self around these are temper tantrums but they're actually not. There in his normal way of expressing what's the best way to handle a problem I'm always terrified. One very good idea is to try to give a word of warning before things are taken away now are the little tiny baby sometimes you can't reason with them but only understand if you're easy with the minute the warning that is going to happen. Given a little do you know on that for example you can let him have a few minutes longer in the tub when he says he wants to get out you know in a little minute and then when you finally taking marching. You can also suggest something different find a fight with basically surely back for him as a person then if he does really show temper and sometimes you may just calmly nod and probably he'll get over age range pretty rapidly unless of course we all are overtired. Parents. Probably were beginning to be restless night again most begin to have trouble sleeping again some where between nine and eighteen months and they may have trouble getting to sleep or else they may again waking up during the night. As if they had to learn a new way of getting down to sleep sometimes it seems as if they dream night they suddenly wake up crying perhaps and that even a number of times during a not many babies who went happily to sleep when they were younger now cry if a baby does not settle down after fifteen or twenty minutes in order to go to any time for the moment be sure there's nothing wrong for liberating No I don't think when he feels lonely or restless or for he should. Sometimes just seeing his mother hearing her voice will reassure them or leaving the light on remember that these are the years that he's developing a sense of trust in their own learning about our car so the exciting games of. Any child from feeling sleepy so you might try to have a quiet time thing you're talking before the baby is. All right. It takes patience and understanding a good parent will. And you know even the best parents get across sometimes them that not too. You can get across that what a child. Don't get across the best lies in understanding what the child want to do. The best. Child happy not showing you know success in bringing up children requires neither perfect children or perfect parents but a relationship of mutual confidence and affection that enables the children and the parents to grow and to learn happily I'm afraid our time is almost gone but the Baumgartner well before I go I do want to thank all of you that in your suggestions and time and I'm trying to answer your questions and follow some of your suggestions to you know why I find your letters very helpful in planning these programs and every now and I get a good idea about bringing up babies myself to let me hear from are you by Thank you Dr Baumgardner dot com The owner Baumgartner will be with us again on Tuesday Nov fifteenth at ten forty five to ten you more of all babies in general and eleven month old babies in particular if you would like a copy of this or any of the previous dolphin mysterious and your requests to the Department of Health one hundred twenty five words three thirty this is an ethical broadcasting.
