President Biden’s sweeping and costly infrastructure plan calls for spending $621 billion on transportation projects alone over eight years.
Amtrak and leadership for the Gateway Project have been begging the federal government for years to repair the Hudson River tunnel, which was damaged during superstorm Sandy. A plan to build a second tunnel to add capacity was also stalled by the Trump administration.
President Biden is including $80 billion that could go to Gateway and fund a backlog of repairs and upgrades to Amtrak.
His infrastructure plan also includes money the MTA could use for its capital plan. Biden’s $2 trillion package relies on tax increases that are opposed by Republicans.
