Black Trans Lives Matter Calls For Inclusiveness

Over the weekend, tens of thousands of demonstrators rallied in front of the Brooklyn Museum to call for justice for black, transgender people, and to remind activist that transgender and gender-nonconforming people should be a crucial part of the Black Lives Matter movement.

Co-organizer of the rally and founder of The Okra Project, Ianne Fields Stewart, joined WNYC host Jami Floyd to talk about the moment.

"It is undeniable that when we were in the space yesterday you could feel history crackling in the air," said Stewart.

According to the Human Rights Campaign, there have been 14 reported murders of trans and gender non-conforming people since the beginning of 2020. The National Center for Transgender Equality reports that nearly 60% of transgender people experienced harassment or abuse when interacting with police.
