By Tuesday afternoon, back on line after the "historic" storm that was predicted never showed up. Gov. Andrew Cuomo said at a press conference that about 500 pieces of equipment — plows, dump trucks, front end loaders — were being sent to Suffolk County, where they're needed most.
Transit:
The subway system is up and running on a Sunday schedule. Metro-North service is back. LIRR has restored service on six lines, though they are running on a weekend schedule. And PATH trains are now running every fifteen minutes. The ban on non-emergency vehicles in New York City and seven downstate counties is lifted, as is the ban in New Jersey. This leaves only Suffolk County under a ban.
City schools are closed today but will be open Wednesday. For a full list of school closures in the tri-state area, check here.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo defended his decision to shut down mass transit, saying "you act on the information you have at the time." He said the subway system will come back on line today faster as a result of the overnight shutdown.
He said the roads from Long Island and Westchester are "passable" but said they should be avoided nonetheless.
