New York City officials are warning that starting Monday, drivers should expect more delays than usual on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway.
From Atlantic Avenue to the Brooklyn Bridge, the number of lanes will be reduced from three to two in both directions.
It's part of the city’s plan to reduce stress on the stacked, triple-cantilever section of the BQE, that's deteriorated and could need major repairs soon.
The Department of Transportation taking away a lane will reduce weight on the roadway, and extend its lifespan. It's also widening those two lanes, to try and prevent crashes.
The city also plans to fine overweight trucks that aren't allowed on the BQE, and waterproof the pavement.
Mayor de Blasio hopes these steps will buy another 20 years before the city needs to come up with a permanent replacement for that part of the BQE.
