Brazil Fans Grieve After Soccer Powerhouse is Eliminated from World Cup

Brazil's Neymar holds his shinbone during the quarterfinal match between Brazil and Belgium at the 2018 soccer World Cup in the Kazan Arena, in Kazan, Russia, Friday, July 6, 2018.

Brazil entered the World Cup as one of the favorites to win the entire tournament. Instead the team fell to Belgium 2-1 in Friday's quarterfinal match.

At a viewing party at SOBs (Sounds of Brazil) in Lower Manhattan, fans taking in the match repeatedly expressed confidence that their team would come back and win it all, even as their team found themselves in an early 1-0 hole.

"We always expect that Brazil is going to win no matter what's the team," said Jessica Riberio. But as the score remained 2-0, onlookers started to slump in their seats.

"I'm holding on to my last train of hope. The waiter keeps coming around to ask if we're okay, and I'm like we're not ok," expressed Karina Buccirelli as she gripped a small Brazilian flag.

When Brazil finally scored cheers erupted, and the shared knowledge throughout the room became that Brazil would come back in the last 10 minutes of the match and ultimately win against Belgium. But it was not to be, and the five-time World Cup winners went home disappointed, and unable to reclaim the title for the first time since 2002.

Belgium will play France in the semi-finals on July 10.
