Bridge and Tunnel Toll Hikes Move Forward

Crossing the Hudson is about to get a bit more expensive.

A lawsuit that would have halted the next round of bridge and tunnel toll hikes filed by the American Automobile Association (AAA) was blocked by a federal judge today.

Starting Dec. 7, EZ-Pass drivers will pay $11.75, and drivers who pay cash will dole out $14. Truckers will pay $96 if they have E-ZPass—a $12 increase—and $114 if they pay in cash. This is the fourth of five rounds of toll hikes the Port Authority has implemented since 2011

AAA argued that the Port Authority is using toll money to finance projects that have nothing to do with bi-state transportation.

“The light of day has shone on [the Port Authority’s] actions,” said Robert Sinclair, Jr., AAA New York’s spokesman. “They are using money from toll payers for non-Interstate Transportation Network facilities.”

The suit specifically cited infrastructure projects on the Pulaski Skyway, Routes 1 and 9, and the Bayonne Bridge, as projects that interstate drivers should not foot the bill for.

Richard Mark, a lawyer who represented the Port Authority, said these projects fell under the umbrella of interstate transportation, and that their budgets were presented “clearly, openly, and publicly.”
